Italian yachting heavyweights unite to save Perini Navi

The Maltese Falcon is one of Perini Navi's most famous yachts

2 major Italian yards create a joint venture to take over the Perini Navi shipyard, which was declared bankrupt in January 2021.

The Ferretti and San Lorenzo Group at the bedside of Perini Navi

The sailing superyacht specialist Perini Navi, founded in 1983 by Fabio Perini, had been declared bankrupt on January 29, 2021 by the Tuscan court of Lucca. The reputed shipyard for the construction of the Maltese Falcon, with three sites in Viareggio and La Spezia in Italy and in Turkey, had been adding up losses for several years. Several names of candidates for the takeover were circulating the day after the judgement, including Ferretti Yachts and San Lorenzo. It was finally together that they could take over the management of Perini Navi. The two specialists in Italian yachting announced on February 15, 2021 the creation of a joint venture to this end. Called NewCo, the company is equally owned (50% each) by the two groups. It is positioning itself for the acquisition of the Perini Navi brand, as well as the shipyards, with the aim of maintaining employment.

Maintaining Italian yachting know-how

Already a candidate for the takeover of Perini Navi in 2020, Ferretti Group preferred the Blue Skye investment fund. Its director Alberto Galassi reaffirms his will to maintain a local brand and know-how in luxury yachting. "At Ferretti, we are always looking for excellence and opportunities to integrate it with our own. And we often find it in Italy as we do today. We are confident that our commitment will translate into further growth that will benefit the region and raise the profile of the Italian yachting industry." Through the operation, it also avoids common subcontractor failures between Perini and its own shipyards. After the acquisition of Wally, Ferretti also fits even more into the sailing yacht panorama.
