IDB Marine will revive the former Espace Vag shipyard

Denis Bourbigot, head of IDB Marine

The sailboat builder IDB Marine will reinvest the former premises of the Espace Vag shipyard. Denis Bourbigot tells us more about the project driven by the success of the Maxi 6.50 and the arrival of the Mojito 6.50.

IDB Marine moves into the former Espace Vag shipyard

More than 18 months after the liquidation of the cat-boat construction specialist Espace Vag, the buildings of the Concarneau shipyard will once again be home to sailboats. It is the neighbouring builder IDB Marine who will invest the premises. Cramped on its historic site of Le Minaouet in Trégunc, the shipyard had already had to rent premises in the industrial zone of Concarneau to launch the production of the Maxi 6.50, the mini production boat based on the David Raison design. Faced with the success, space was again lacking. The opportunity to rent the former premises of Espace Vag, near the port of Concarneau, seduced Denis Bourbigot, head of IDB Marine. "In Coat Conq (Editor's note: the site rented for the Maxi 6.50), we had 300 m². With IDB's premises, we can recover 700 m² excluding the mezzanine. We're going to be able to do 2 boats in parallel" he is delighted.

Premises suitable for boat building

In addition to the location close to the dry port and suppliers such as Cornouaille Gréement, the premises will be fitted out for IDB Marine's sailboat production needs. "The owner has already launched a first phase of work to bring the electricity up to standard and do a bit of clean up outside. We will be able to keep the ventilation. A bit of partitioning will be done to be able to return quickly to the premises before the summer" explains Denis Bourbigot.

Ensure boat deliveries and facilitate the work of employees

The choice of this new tool is motivated by the order book, but also by the working conditions of the employees. "The Maxi 6.50 is a success. There are already 32 of them in the water and we have about 20 to make. We deliver one per month. For the Mojito 6.50 (Editor's note: the first boat has not yet been delivered), there are already 3 to be made. We must underline the team's state of mind. I know that if there are twice as many boats to build, they will be twice as motivated, but you need the conditions to do it. We're going to commission the premises and then we'll see to recruit people, probably about four people," says the head of IDB Marine.
