IDBMarine leaves the Minaouet : "You have to know how to reduce the sail"

The IDB Marine shipyard is concentrating on small boats and abandoning its Minaouet site in Trégunc. Denis Bourbigot, its founder, explains this decision.

IDB Marine focuses on the Moros site in Concarneau

IDB Marine was working since 2019 on 2 production sites. To face the success of the Maxi 6.50, it had to find a temporary solution complementary to its main site of Minaouet in Trégunc, shared with Marée Haute. A permanent solution was finally put in place in 2021, by taking over the premises of the former Espace Vag shipyard in Concarneau . In October 2022, the Finistère-based manufacturer finally decided to concentrate all of its activity on the latter, leaving the Minaouet shipyard by the end of 2022, and stopping production of its largest models, the Mojito and Malango 8.8 and 10.8.

Denis Bourbigot, the company's director, explains: "The decision has been made since January 2022 in reality. Pascal, our salesman, was no longer allowed to sell the big boats. We only have 2 left to finish by the end of the year. Having 2 sites was complicated to manage. Now we'll have one site at full capacity, rather than two sites at half capacity."

Recruitment difficulties in the nautical industry

The main operational reason for Denis Bourbigot to concentrate the activity on one site is the human resources issue. "The reality is that we can't recruit and I don't see this improving in the future. There are still 20 people at IDBMarine, just like before the launch of the Maxi 6.50. We're going to stay that way and on one site, with better working conditions."

The second, more personal, reason for focusing on small boats is the company's development philosophy: "I didn't create IDBMarine to make a factory. When it grows, it's exhilarating, but you mustn't forget that the initial objective was to create a job for myself! Today, I was no longer doing my job, I was spending my time managing fires. We'll be able to take more time to talk to customers. We will make almost as much turnover and the employees will be treated better. Contrary to what they say in Port la Forêt, when you shock, you're not necessarily a coward!"

With an order book of almost 2 years on the Maxi and Mojito 6.50, IDBMarine sees the future with serenity.
