Boat registrations are a closely watched indicator for the boating industry. Between January and May 2026, Spain recorded 2,228 new pleasure boat registrations, including jet skis. According to data published by ANEN, the national association of Spanish nautical companies, the market grew by 10.6% compared with the same period in 2025. This development raises a number of questions for manufacturers, distributors, marinas and rental operators.
Small units continue to dominate the Spanish market
The first lesson concerns the breakdown of registrations by size. Boats under 6 meters remain in the majority, with 1,462 registrations in the first five months of the year. This category accounts for 65.6% of the Spanish market, up 9.7% on 2025.
This dominance confirms the importance of compact units in Spanish yachting. Their lower acquisition cost, ease of storage and low running costs appeal to first-time buyers and occasional yachtsmen alike.
For shipbuilders, this trend confirms that market volume is still based mainly on small motorboats and coastal craft.
Boats over 8 metres show the best dynamics
While boats under 6 meters account for the majority of sales, those over 8 meters are recording the strongest growth. This trend deserves the attention of professionals, as it reflects a renewed interest in more ambitious sailing programs. Coastal cruising, ocean cruising and crewed charter often require larger, better-equipped units.
For builders specializing in speedboats, cruising yachts and catamarans, this trend is a positive indicator of the investment capacity of some customers.
Conversely, this segment remains more sensitive to economic conditions, financing rates and operating costs.
Sea scooters remain a major market player
The report also highlights sustained activity in the jet ski market. Spain recorded 604 registrations of jet skis between January and May 2026. This level of activity confirms the importance of this segment in Mediterranean leisure boating.
Sea scooters can be used for a variety of purposes: seasonal rental, individual use or tourism. Their success is particularly noticeable in coastal regions with a strong focus on tourism.
For port and nautical base managers, however, this growth implies specific needs in terms of reception, safety and organization of the waterways.
An indicator to keep an eye on for the summer season
The published figures cover only the first five months of the year. They therefore offer a snapshot of the market before the peak tourist season. Spain is one of Europe's leading marine markets. Its activity has a direct influence on many of the builders, importers and equipment manufacturers present in the Mediterranean basin.
The results observed in spring 2026 show an upward market trend, driven both by the volume of small units and by the dynamism of larger boats.
It now remains to be seen whether this increase will be confirmed during the summer of 2026, a period that traditionally accounts for a large share of Spanish boating activity.
