Ocean Shipyard fails to relaunch Discovery yachts

18 months after the takeover of Discovery Shipyard, the new British shipyard, Ocean Shipyard, has gone into liquidation. The future of the Southerly and Bluewater ranges now looks bleak.

Ocean Shipyard goes into liquidation

British sailboat builder Ocean Shipyard has applied to the court for voluntary liquidation on June 16, 2023. This liquidation will take place only 18 months after the newly-created company took over the assets of the former Discovery Shipyard at the court bar . The company had moved into the former sailboat production sites in Southampton, in the south of England.

Sailboat range relaunch fails

When Ocean Shipyard was founded, with former Discovery Shipyard managing director Steve Edwards at the helm, the takeover strategy was based on diversifying the business away from new boats. The company wanted to offer its joinery expertise for boat outfitting and sailboat refits, but also to open up to sectors outside the yachting industry.

Unfortunately, the market failed to respond, and Southerly yachts were unable to attract enough customers to re-launch for the 2022-2023 season. Ocean Shipyard is therefore forced to follow the same path as its predecessor, Discovery Shipyard.
