Multimono : A page is turned for the self-built boat

The Philonautic company, which marketed the Multimono kits and sailboats, stops its activity. A choice that its founder, Claude Martinuzzi, explains to us.

End of activity for Philonautic

After nearly 20 years of making his Multimono live, Claude Martinuzzi decided to put an end to the activity of Philonautic, the company he had created for the distribution of this sailing boat. Since December 31, 2022, the company has stopped its activity, although 4 Multimono are still under construction, in Avranches, Audierne and Sainte-Anne in Martinique. In total, 47 Multimono have touched the water.

The founder explains: "All the current orders are from 2021 and since then, the situation is complex. Prices are rising considerably, reaching 35,000 euros including tax for a kit without a trailer in early 2022, and supplies are sometimes tricky. Plus, at 70 years old, the concentration needed to prepare kits sometimes slips and wrists get tired."

If there is no buyer for the company, the door remains open for the possible manufacture of Multimono, even if the know-how remains strongly attached to its designer.

Boats designed for the collective

The Multimono was born in Claude Martinuzzi's head for the Eco Nautic Challenge, a challenge intended to gather amateur teams to build boats, race with them and inspire vocations. Light monohull, designed for collective use and training by the former sports teacher, the sailboat will finally seduce both individuals and associations. Nevertheless, according to its initiator, it suffers from the evolution of practices. "Young people today are less inclined towards collective boats. In sailing schools, catamarans dominate. It's a pity, because a monohull that leans offers great moments, with a role for everyone, the one who wants to steer, the other who regulates and even the one who doesn't want to do anything. I think there's still room for everyone in sailing schools."
