The Beneteau Group announced the death of Dieter Gust on July 8, 2026. As the founder of Construction Navale Bordeaux and former CEO of the group?s Boat Division, he left a lasting mark on the boating industry, particularly through the development of CNB and the Lagoon brand.

The French boating community has lost one of its most prominent figures. Dieter Gust passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. An entrepreneur, sailor, and business executive, he contributed significantly to the development of Construction Navale Bordeaux (CNB) and later the Beneteau Group, where he held strategic positions for nearly three decades.

A shipyard in Bordeaux that has become a benchmark in the luxury yachting industry

In 1987, Dieter Gust founded Construction Navale Bordeaux with Olivier Lafourcade. The shipyard quickly specialized in the construction of large sailing yachts and made a name for itself with its aluminum vessels designed for long-distance cruising.

The launch of Mariccha II is one of the defining achievements of this period. This project has helped cement CNB?s reputation in the large sailing yacht segment, where the shipyard has developed recognized expertise in steel construction and custom-built vessels.

A career closely tied to the growth of the Beneteau Group

When CNB joined the Beneteau Group in 1992, Dieter Gust remained at the helm before gradually taking on broader responsibilities. He then became managing director of the group?s Boat Division, a position he held until 2019.

During this period, he supported the Vendée-based manufacturer?s international growth through an approach that combined industrial development, market knowledge, and product line diversification.

Among the projects that bear his mark are the founding of CNB Yacht, which specializes in large luxury sailboats, and the development of Lagoon, which over the years has become one of the world?s leading brands of cruising catamarans.

An Unconventional Path Before Entering the Marine Industry

Born in Germany, Dieter Gust followed an unusual path before entering the shipbuilding industry. A former goalkeeper for the German Olympic team and later a professional soccer player, he went on to work as a ski and windsurfing instructor in the south of France.

His passion for sailing then led him to work as a welder at a shipyard specializing in tall ships, and later as a yacht skipper and operator of crewed charter boats. This experience at sea would shape his vision of shipbuilding and the evolution of large cruising yachts.

A well-known figure in the boating industry

Upon the announcement of his passing, the Beneteau Group and the CNB teams paid tribute to the legacy left by the man who had a profound impact on the shipyard?s history.

"Today, CNB has lost its founder. Dieter left a profound mark on our history and passed on much more than a vision for shipbuilding: a passion, a commitment to excellence, and a trust in the men and women who bring this shipyard to life every day. We owe him a great deal and will continue to keep his spirit alive at CNB." , says Clément Himily, general manager of the Sailing Business Unit.

Bruno Thivoyon, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Beneteau Group, also paid tribute to the man who had supported the group's growth for nearly thirty years: " "On behalf of the Beneteau Group, we honor the memory of Dieter Gust with respect and gratitude for all he has contributed to our Group."

The editorial staff at boatindustry extends its condolences to his wife, his two daughters, his loved ones, and the colleagues who worked alongside him throughout his career.
