At its annual general meeting, the Fédération des Industries Nautiques (French Nautical Industries Federation) highlights a number of key issues for the industry. Behind the figures, the question is how to maintain business in a market that is normalizing.
A new-build market on the decline after an atypical period
The data presented confirm a trend that began two seasons ago. The market for new boats is declining, particularly in the most popular segments.
Motor yachts under 9 meters and monohulls, which account for almost 50% of volumes, are the hardest hit. This decline is part of a logical cycle following the post-Covid years, which were marked by strong demand.
Production sales thus return to a level close to 2021-2022. A normalization rather than a break.
Upper segments cushion the decline
Not all segments are following the same trajectory. Motorboats over 9 meters are partly offsetting the drop in volume with higher unit values.
The same applies to multihulls and large sailboats, which continue to enjoy positive momentum. This segment benefits from an international clientele and a demand oriented towards long-distance cruising.
This market polarization forces manufacturers to arbitrate. Positioning themselves on volume or moving upmarket implies different technical, commercial and industrial choices.
Export on the rise
Exports continue to grow, accounting for 80.8% of sales. This level confirms the French industry's dependence on international markets.
Conversely, the French new-build market continues to lag behind. However, recent indicators show a slowdown in the decline. Over the period September 2025 to February 2026, registrations fell by 9.7% for powerboats and 5.8% for sailboats.
At the same time, the second-hand market remains at a high level. The issuance of yachting licenses also remains buoyant.
Governance and strategic continuity
The AGM also ratified the reappointment of Jean-Paul Chapeleau as Chairman for a further two years. The executive committee was also re-elected. It comprises Jean-Claude Ibos (Wichard SAS), Fabrice Lacoume (Yamaha Motor Europe), Stephan Serra (Uship SAS), Nicolas Gardies (Fountaine Pajot-Dufour) and Gérard Lachkar (AGL).
In addition, two new directors join the FIN Board. They are Benoit Chatillon (Tenderlift) and Guillaume Pujol (Yanmar).
