Groupe Bénéteau and Volvo Penta have unveiled a joint project to develop a hybrid electric drive at the Düsseldorf 2023 boat show.

A hybrid system inspired by the commercial marine

After trials in the commercial marine, Volvo Penta will integrate a hybrid electric system on a Bénéteau Group boat. This concept, deployed for yachting, follows a pilot project for a hybrid electric ship for Hurtigruten Svalbard launched in 2022.

A pilot project on a 37-foot motorboat

For this project, the engine manufacturer has chosen the Bénéteau Group and the Jeanneau NC37, whose 37-foot size corresponds to the shipyards' core range. The boat will be parked at Volvo Penta's site in Krossholmen, Sweden. Media, customers and dealers will be invited to come and discover this new solution. They will be able to take part in the learning process of this pilot project.

This test platform will also allow us to ask customers about their needs and expectations in terms of program, autonomy, connectivity, automation...

A joystick and docking assistance in electric mode

The NC37 used for this pilot project will be equipped with a Volvo Penta twin D4-320 DPI Aquamatic hybrid-electric concept. The boat will also be equipped with a joystick, for maneuvering, and the dynamic positioning system, both adapted for electric operation. The yard states: "This test boat will also feature enhanced maneuverability, a hydraulic clutch for quiet shifting at low rpm, and improved control through precise joystick functionality."

With this system, the NC37 will be able to offer up to 3 hours of autonomy at a cruising speed of 8 to 9 knots.

A concept to be tested in Sweden

This new experiment will be available for testing from spring 2023. The idea is to be able to equip other models with this system, including models with Volvo D4 and D6 engines.
