WEBscant : Structure calculation on the cloud

Principle of operation of WEBscant

FIN launches WEBscant, an online boat structure calculation tool. It will be used to optimize the next ISO 12215-5 standard, before a possible commercial future.

A dematerialized computing service

The French Nautical Industries Federation launches a new online structure calculation tool according to the ISO 12215-5 standard. Using a secure access, WEBscant allows architects and designers to deposit on the site their boat model. In return, they receive a report detailing the results and verifying that their design meets the current ISO standard. The whole calculation is processed by the site and it is not necessary to install any software, except an application providing the interface to submit the data.

A tool at the service of the ISO standard

Launched by FIN, WEBscant is part of the ISO standards monitoring approach dealing with the structure of boats. Representing France on the editorial board, she is involved in the development of the new version concerning the structural calculation of pleasure boats. In order to compare the current ISO 12215 with the future text and to avoid possible aberrations, invisible at first sight, it decided to launch a comparison on a varied sample of boats, including those which leave the beaten track. Based on the I-Scant calculation core of the ICNN and developed by DNConcept, the new tool must offer FIN an anonymous database to refine the parameters of the standard.

Any designer wishing to participate in this collaborative approach can propose his design. "The objective is not to have the same boat 15 times," says Grégoire Dolto, standards expert at the Fédération des Industries Nautiques. To do this, the ISO group will first validate the interest of the project. Only the most relevant elements of the structure will be checked.

The text of the new standard must be fixed at the end of 2017 for publication in the following year

A commercial future?

After the year and a half of development of the standard, what about WEBscant? The reflection is open within the FIN. The implementation of an online structure verification service, on the cloud, could interest architects, especially since post-processing is already in place. Which commercial formula to adopt: year-round licence, purchase of calculations by the unit... All that remains is to find the model.
