Suzuki shows its ambitions in the outboard catamaran market

The Japanese engine manufacturer Suzuki is highlighting its ambitions and experience in the field of outboard-powered catamarans. This is an emerging market on which it hopes to capitalize and attract the sector's shipyards, particularly in Europe.

A rapidly growing outboard catamaran market

After years of growth in the 30-foot plus cruising and charter segments, multihulls continue to grow and are increasingly available in smaller, power-driven versions. From Aquila Catamarans to the Bénéteau Group's Four Winns, small outboard motor catamarans, which have experienced strong growth in the United States and Oceania, are tending to develop on the world market, particularly in Europe.

For the outboard engine specialist Suzuki, there is a great opportunity here, as Philippe Caignec, sales representative for Suzuki Marine France, testifies: "We feel that the outboard catamaran market is starting to evolve. There's also a flurry in this area for boat rentals. It's a niche where everyone is clearing out."

The Mer Agitée catamaran experience

This evolution towards the outboard catamaran, Suzuki Marine has been able to prepare for it. Indeed, since 2017, skipper Michel Desjoyeaux has had two 300-horsepower Suzuki outboard engines on his Mer Agitée catamaran. This technical solution, adapted to the constraints of a non-standard multihull, made from former trimaran floats, has enabled the Japanese engine manufacturer to acquire know-how in the field.

Since then, Suzuki has also powered an Aventura cruising catamaran with 2 outboards.

The teams are delighted with these boats, which prepare them for this emerging market: "Michel Desjoyeaux's Mer Agitée catamaran is a great showcase. It gives us a technological edge and confidence in our solutions. Michel Desjoyeaux is a demanding customer, and if something doesn't work, he says so. So this lasting partnership is a great recognition."
