Editorial / A future of the yachting industry still on 2 hulls?

The success of multihulls is undeniable. Are they inexorably destined to supplant monohulls, whether under motor or sail?

The motor multihull in full boom

Although small motor catamarans have existed for many years in the United States, the choice of multihulls is now spreading to larger units. For several years now, major manufacturers have been interested in catamarans for power cruising, combining living space and lower fuel consumption than a monohull for equivalent use. After Fountaine-Pajot and Prestige, it is the turn of the Catana group to want to move the simple adaptation of the sailboat to the engine and to create a dedicated range, investing for it in Portugal.

With the arrival in Europe of Four Winns on the small models, the dynamic seems to be launched.

Limits of use

However, the question of space in the harbours remains a real problem in dense yachting areas. But it is not the only issue. In the learning of sailing, does the monohull no longer have its place, as the designer of the well named Multimono regrets? Steering, moving on a leaning boat, can have its charm... And a slender boat has its advantages once in port...

Between the generation of the yachtsman and the way of sailing, the customers will decide for one or the other. It doesn't matter how many hulls you have, as long as you can enjoy sailing!
