Editorial / The region's structuring nautical industries

Shipyards are strong markers of coastlines and seaside towns. Their longevity and successive lives mean that everyone can relate to their stories, which we are always happy to tell you.

Building sites with heritage value

For a long time, it was a necessity for a port to have its own shipyard. Now that the number of workshops and boatbuilders has dwindled, their presence is all the more a source of pride for coastal communities. It's this pride that emerges from the history of the Etaples municipal shipyard . The mobilization of the town, and now of Europe, has not only preserved the know-how in marine carpentry for the construction of wooden boats, particularly clinker boats, but also a form of maritime identity for the port of Pas de Calais.

Imagining the future of yachting

Sometimes, economic realities get the better of certain shipyards, some of which are over a hundred years old, like the Sibiril shipyard in Carantec. But here again, the presence of a renowned shipyard in the Finisterian town is part of its identity. The local authority made no mistake in pre-empting the seafront plot to give it a maritime future. Professionals with links to the sea should be able to settle there, and perpetuate the vocation of the site.

These stories of French coastal shipyards highlight the importance of the maritime industry and its nautical component, in every corner of the coastline. A heritage and a future to be invented, of which we are happy to be the spokesperson.
