Boat dismantling: A pilot project to take charge of transport

Deconstruction

The Region of Brittany has joined forces with APER to experiment with the transportation of pleasure boats for dismantling. This initiative could be extended.

1,000 boats to be deconstructed

The Association pour une Plaisance Eco Responsable - APER, the eco-organization in charge of recycling pleasure boats, signed an agreement with the Brittany Region on July 5, 2022, entitled Operation 1,000 Recycled Boats. In order to encourage the development of the dismantling sector for end-of-life pleasure boats, the region has announced that it will pay for the transport of boats from their location to the dismantling site. The aim of the operation is to remove 1,000 registered boats from the coastline and waterways, ranging in size from 2.5 to 24 meters. Each boat owner wishing to get rid of his or her boat will have until December 31, 2022 to take advantage of the scheme.

Validate the pool of vessels to be deconstructed

The operation launched with the Brittany Region is an experiment for APER. Identified as an obstacle to the development of deconstruction by the organization, the cost of transporting the boat could in the future be covered by the organization along with the rest of the recycling process. APER had been asking for this for several months, but it was not possible to determine whether it was really a hindrance for the boater. The results of the 1,000 recycled boats operation will also allow us to validate the estimate of the pool of boats to be deconstructed in the Brittany region, which is currently the best equipped with approved deconstruction centers.
