Classes de Mer : Breton centers look to the future with optimism

After having been in peril following the Covid, the sea class centers are again surfing on a wave of growth. The opportunity to consider the transformation towards a new economic balance, as explained by Philippe Rodet, director of Nautisme en Bretagne.

Sea classes filled in 2022

In 2022, the Breton coastline will still welcome many school groups to discover the marine environment and water sports. The sea class centers are fully booked for 2022. "We are already attacking the marketing of the 2023 season with sales missions in various departments." says Philippe Rodet, director of Nautisme en Bretagne.

Covid's effects on nautical hospitality exceeded

The closures linked to sanitary constraints during the Covid crisis had made us fear the worst for the sector of reception of nautical groups. In Brittany, the public authorities had launched the "Pass Classes de Mer" scheme to support the structures and avoid their liquidation and the departure in the classic real estate. "There was a significant windfall, with a reopening as early as June 20, 2020, that saved these centers. We no longer have any concerns and are optimistic about their future. Other than the deferral of repayment of some debts, it no longer has an effect on their operations." explains Philippe Rodet.

To consolidate the momentum, the Brittany region has perpetuated the Classes de Mer pass, with a budget of 370,000 euros for 2022. The local authority aims to double the number of people attending.

Open the sea class centers to other activities

The Region of Brittany, supported by Nautisme en Bretagne, wants to take advantage of the dynamics to strengthen the economic model of the sea class centers. "We can engage new challenges, finding diverse support from various backgrounds to expand the park and hybridize it by welcoming other audiences. The centers are in great locations. By adapting the buildings, renovating or refurbishing them, we can consider, for example, welcoming families in summer accommodation, when this is the most economically interesting, and finance the activities of the educational program. The outlook is very optimistic." concludes the director of Nautisme en Bretagne.
