Italy sees its nautical industry growing

The Cofindustria Nautica, the Italian nautical employers' association, has presented its figures for the year 2020 and its forecasts for the year 2021 for the yachting sector. An optimistic panorama for shipyards and nautical equipment manufacturers.

More than 20% growth in the Italian nautical industry by 2021

On the occasion of the Genoa Boat Show, Cofindustria Nautica, representing Italian yachting companies, presented its indicators for the year 2021. Based on the figures obtained on August 31, 2021, the organization anticipates a growth of +23.8% in the turnover of the entire Italian nautical sector in 2021, between 5.5 and 6 billion euros. If the data is confirmed, this would be a return to 2007-2008 levels for the sector.

A growing export of boats

The shipbuilding sector is strengthening its export activity as of June 30, 2021. The order book has reached 2.8 billion euros, with many shipyards occupied for the next 3 years.

A different 2020 for shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers

The consolidated statistics allow us to visualize the contrasting effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the Italian nautical industry. Thanks to an early reopening of the shipyards, their sales reached 4.66 billion euros. They are maintaining positive growth of +1.36%.

On the equipment manufacturers' side, the situation is more complex. They have experienced a decline of -8.7%, due to confinements and difficulties in supply chains.

Employment in the nautical sector in Italy is expected to increase by +2.4% in 2020.

The reform of the VAT conditions on ship leasing, wanted by the European Union, as for other countries, has made these contracts decrease, according to the Italian leasing association, by 57.7%, with a total value of 136 Meuros and an average level of 777,000 Euros.
