Verado V12 600 hp, Mercury launches its largest outboard ever built

Paved in the pond. At a time when we are being told that it is right to keep and preserve our environment, Mercury is announcing the biggest outboard it has ever built: a 600 hp V12. Clearly, outboard propulsion is on the rise and shipyards are still asking for bigger engines to propel bigger and bigger boats. Mercury is the answer.

Mercury announces a new outboard in its Verado range. Not sure if it's for everyone, but it's sure to make a splash. Indeed, it's a 12-cylinder V-drive with a displacement of 7.6 liters, but more importantly, it develops 600 hp..

600 hp is the largest outboard engine developed by the American brand Mercury (but not the largest outboard since Seven Marine has already launched a 627 hp). To reach 600 hp, the Mercury doesn't use a turbo, it's a naturally aspirated engine. With its 572 kg on the scale, it will be necessary to find a hull capable of supporting it on its transom. Probably a unit over 40 feet long. Mercury does not hesitate to indicate that this engine is for heavy units.

For its Verado V12 600 hp, Mercury has installed a gearbox. 2 gears that give torque on start up and like a car gearbox, changes gears to gain speed once started. The transmission is entrusted to a double helix which turns in counter rotation (the same principle used by Suzuki for its 350 bhp).

The base plate is truly innovative. Indeed, it pivots to provide steering while the entire drive head remains fixed. By turning the steering wheel, only the base plate swivels underwater. At the rear you can't see anything! This solution responds to the problem of the width of the drive heads, which handicaps multi-engine assembly. Thus it is possible to glue the engines together without them getting in the way when cornering. This solution allows a maximum rotation of 45° (compared to 30° in a conventional direction).

Mercury has designed a complete control station (gas and electronic management) to make life easier for the helmsman who doesn't have to worry about anything, especially with the Activ'Trim (automatic trim). The top cover above the power head lifts up (like a car hood) to allow engine maintenance without having to get out of the water.

The availability of this engine in Europe is scheduled for the summer of 2021, but we do not yet know its price. But if you want to have the biggest one, it's now a Mercury that you need!
