World Surf Championship in France: which host city?

The French Surf Federation is looking for host cities for its bid to host the World Surfing Championships in 2017.

A strategic and mediatized edition

The 2017 Surf Open World Championships will be an exceptional edition for several reasons:

  • A long awaited decision, surfing must be officially declared an Olympic discipline in August 2016.
  • The host city for the 2024 Olympic Games is to be designated a few weeks after the competition. Paris, candidate for 2024, will therefore be keen to support this event.

Many candidates

Faced with the influx of demand from French coastal communities to welcome surfers on their waves, the French surfing federation has decided to set up a structured selection procedure. To this end, it is launching a Call for Applications, relying for the technical part on Olbia Conseil, a consultancy firm specialising in support for the organisation of public or private sporting events.

The opportunity to develop the federation

First European nation and third worldwide, France is important in the international surfing landscape. With 80,000 licence holders regularly on the board, the federation relies on a pool of important practitioners. It wishes to take advantage of the organisation of the World Surf Open Championships in 2017 to continue its development policy. Moreover, it will allow the association to capitalize on this experience by gaining valuable know-how for national and international competitions.
