An electric powertrain to complement the diesel engine
The M2HSET combines the M-Line two-cylinder diesel engines with a 24-volt permanent-magnet electric motor. According to the Vetus catalog, this motor delivers a maximum power output of 2.3 kW and a torque of 17 Nm.
Power is transmitted via a belt-and-pulley assembly connected to the propeller shaft. This allows the boater to use the electric propulsion system for maneuvering and low-speed travel?particularly in harbors and canals?while reserving the diesel engine for longer voyages.
When the diesel engine is running, the electric motor can also act as a generator to recharge the batteries. The launch documentation specifies a charging current of up to 30 A.
A system designed for retrofitting
One of the advantages of the M2HSET is that it can be installed on boats that are already motorized. Vetus notes that the kit can retain compatible engine mounts and the existing propeller shaft, which minimizes the mechanical modifications required.
Switching between propulsion modes is handled by an ELPS2H side-mounted control unit that uses the V-CAN protocol and incorporates a neutral safety feature.
For shipyards and refit professionals, this design makes it possible to consider hybridization without completely replacing the internal combustion engine. However, the cost of installation will depend on the boat?s configuration and the battery system selected.
Vetus plans to expand its hybrid solutions to higher-powered engines. In its launch announcement, the manufacturer does not specify the price of the M2HSET or the electric range that can be achieved with a given installation.
