The Mediterranean market for sail maintenance and repair is experiencing strong growth, driven by large yachts and multihulls. To support this growth, North Sails is relocating its operations from Mouans-Sartoux to a 700-square-meter workshop in Fréjus, in the Var department. This relocation is intended to enable the company to expand its scope of operations while maintaining its long-standing business with recreational sailors and regatta competitors along the French Riviera.
A workshop designed for large-scale operations
One of the main challenges posed by this move is the increasing size of the sailboats operating in the western Mediterranean.
The new workshop is now capable of handling sails for yachts over 130 feet in length. This capability opens the door for North Sails to a particularly demanding market segment where the size and logistical challenges require specialized facilities.
In addition, the Fréjus site includes several technical features that were either absent or more limited at the previous site.
Two rotating sewing stations have been installed to facilitate the handling of large sails. An overhead crane completes the equipment, enabling the movement of heavy loads while minimizing the risks associated with manual handling.
Improving storage capacity
In addition to repairs, North Sails also offers winter storage services. The new workshop features secure, dry, and climate-controlled spaces designed to store sails while vessels are out of service. This service meets a growing demand from shipowners and management companies seeking to extend the lifespan of technical textiles.
A strategic location at the heart of the Mediterranean market
The location of Fréjus also makes sense from a logistical standpoint. The workshop is situated right next to the highway network, about 35 minutes from Saint-Tropez and roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes from La Ciotat. The ports of Cannes, Antibes, Nice, and Monaco are all easily accessible.
Behind this move lies a broader ambition. According to Laurent Mahy, the site manager, the goal is to offer an alternative to the established hubs in Palma de Mallorca and Italy for the classic yacht and superyacht markets. The Mediterranean is home to a significant portion of the world?s fleet of large sailing vessels. The demand for maintenance, repair, and inventory replacement is particularly high there.
