A NMEA 2000 standard for electric boats

The National Marine Electronics Association has updated its standards to adapt protocols for electrical installations related to electric boats and their battery management.

Specific messages for electric boats

The National Marine Electronics Association, or NMEA, which runs the main electronic standard, NMEA 2000, has announced an update dedicated to electric power and battery management. Six new message types or "parameter group numbers" have been added to the standard and its annex B. These will allow the manufacturer of equipment related to the electric boat, whether it be motorization, propulsion or battery management, to communicate with the rest of the equipment on board via the existing displays and control boxes.

A partnership approach

For the NMEA, this update will allow OEMs to benefit from the reliability of existing electronics and focus on developing electrical solutions, as its president Mark Reedenaueur says: "The NMEA2000 standard has become the means for boat data to be visible and monitored from multiple displays on board. Adopting NMEA2000 saves electric propulsion and battery manufacturers resources by partnering with certified display manufacturers and using their displays to view their engine and battery data."
