Mercury Marine launches the Avator electric motor

While the market was previously reserved for small independent players, the leading U.S. producer of combustion outboard motors is entering the electric boat motor market. Mercury Marine presented its first electric outboard motor model, called Avator, on February 16, 2022. The first in the range, which will be open to orders in September 2022 for delivery in 2023, it should be joined by five other models in the coming months.

A transportable electric motor

Mercury Marine isn't officially disclosing the power of its first Avator, but the design indicates that it starts with low horsepower, favoring portability. It's intended for small boats and transportable units.

An easily removable and interchangeable battery system inside the hood allows the boater to easily recharge. The battery is suitable for fast charging.

An integrated display shows all the information about the battery charge and the engine operation.

Towards an electric Mercury Marine range

For the U.S. manufacturer and its parent company, the Brunswick Group, this is a new step in the strategy initiated several years ago, particularly by strengthening its subsidiary Advanced Systems Group and its marine electrical activities. Mercury Marine is aiming to reduce its engine emissions by 80% by 2025, according to its president Chris Drees.

The electric revolution will probably also affect dealers, who are now more used to marine mechanics than electric motors.
