Brest: Structuring around the future large careening area

Brest wants to have a high-capacity careening area, like the one in Concarneau above

The maritime and yachting professionals of Brest are preparing for the creation of the future large careening area. A new joint company has been created to invest in the facilities alongside the local authorities.

Creation of the Société d'Exploitation Brestoise de l'Aire de Carénage

The project for a new facility for ship repair and construction, both professional and pleasure, in the commercial port of Brest is progressing. In this context, a group of 14 companies in the sector have announced the creation of a new entity, called Société d'Exploitation Brestoise de l'Aire de Carénage (SEBAC). The company will bring together players in the yachting industry such as the chantier du Guip, Ker Vrest Komposite (KVK) and XXL Composite, along with professional shipbuilders and repairers such as BMA and CnnMco, and service providers and stakeholders in the industry such as Endel, Guyot environnement, Métal action, Neotech Energy, Recycleurs bretons, SPRD, Trïode, Brest Aim. The president is Yann Mauffret, head of the Guip shipyard. SEBAC's vocation is to invest alongside the local authorities in the tools needed for the careening area. The private investment must count for 20% of the total amount in the balance announced by the Region of Brittany, that is to say 3,8 Meuros for the professionals.

A tool for the yachting and professional naval industries expected in 2023

The new careening area has been under discussion for many years, but the schedule is now more precise. The equipment is expected to be commissioned in 2023. In addition to a high-capacity boat elevator, the area dedicated to ship maintenance will have the appropriate infrastructure and equipment: a lifting dock, a fitting-out pontoon, an environmentally friendly quay with a careening water treatment station, an insulated paint and sandblasting booth, a naval workshop, an area dedicated to dismantling, a handling cart that can be used to reach more distant companies, and living quarters for the crews
