Oxe Marine launches the first diesel-electric outboard engine

Although hybrid thermal and electric installations are in full development on boats, they were for the moment reserved for the inboard. Oxe Marine offers a 450 HP engine that integrates a diesel engine and an electric motor.

A hybrid diesel-electric engine concept

Sweden's Oxe Marine has been working since 2012 to develop diesel outboard engines. This technology, promoted by a handful of manufacturers, remains confidential and limited to certain applications due to its investment cost and the need for intensive use to make it profitable. It could find a new start following the presentation by Oxe Marine of the hybrid outboard engine concept, combining a diesel block and an electric motor, integrated solutions previously reserved for boats with inboard engines.

450 horsepower divided between diesel and electric

Oxe Marine has based its design on its OXE 300 model. The diesel engine block develops 300 horsepower, while accepting HVO100 type biofuels, limiting emissions in thermal mode. The manufacturer has added a 400-volt electric motor, developing 150 horsepower. Depending on the mode chosen, the powers can be combined or used separately, especially in electric only in restricted areas or to enjoy more silence. The engine can also be used as a generator when the boat is running on diesel. According to Anders Berg, the head of Oxe Marine, "The Oxe Hybrid 450 combines the best of both worlds, the fuel efficiency of diesel and the steep torque curve of electric, as well as the possibility of completely emission-free operation."

Testing with Nimbus Group

The engine manufacturer is working with boat builder Nimbus to make its product more reliable through a series of tests on a Nimbus T9. Mass production of the Oxe Hybrid 450 is expected to start in the second half of 2023.
