Special Edition / Seacork: Cork as a proven, sustainable alternative for deck coverings

The cork deck covering manufacturer Seacork offers a material that is both ecological and proven in the boating industry. An offer with interesting technical properties that seduces more and more boat builders.

Cork decks for all types of boats

The Seacork brand has a wide catalog of solutions for cork decking. Made from cork granules and resins, Seacork products come in a variety of forms. They can be slats, similar to those traditionally used for wood, in thicknesses of 4, 6, 8 or 12 mm and widths of 47, 73, 100 or 125 mm, or blank sheets for complex shapes. Seacork also sells grooved or pre-cast sheets with grey, white or black joints. Assembled plates or specific kits are also available.

A truly sustainable product

The Seacork material consists of 95% cork by volume and 60% by weight. This natural material, produced under sustainable conditions, makes Seacork truly environmentally virtuous compared to its competitors, either entirely plastic or from sometimes endangered forests. "Cork is the only material with a positive impact on CO2. The debarking of the cork oak takes place approximately every 10 years. According to the WWF, it then consumes 5 times more CO2 to remake its bark" explains Dominique Radier, representative of Seacork.

Interesting technical properties

The interest of Seacork is not only ecological. Its characteristics of weight euros 3.2 kg / m² for a thickness of 8 mm euros make it competitive with the competition. Reasonably priced, it is also non-slip and easy to maintain. A washing with a brush and a water jet, with classic cleaning products is enough.

Seacork does not heat up underfoot, even in the middle of summer. It is also a good sound insulator. "You hear much less in the cabin when a crew member walks on deck at night" reports Dominique Radier.

If it is damaged by a falling object or sharp element, it is easily repaired by inserting a scrap piece of the correct size and gluing it directly in place.

A proven solution that continues to develop

Distributed for many years, the Seacork has a good feedback. Negotiations are underway to see it appear in major construction sites. Studies are being carried out on aesthetic finishes for a new product intended for high-end units.
