Uship partners with Intermas to test Biorope compostable mooring lines

Compostable mooring lines in test at Uship

The Uship chain has partnered with Intermas, a rope manufacturer, to help develop its Biorope compostable mooring lines. Rémi Baley tells us more about the method, the involvement of boaters and the goal for the nautical company.

Testing Biorope compostable mooring lines in recreational boating

For several years, the Spanish company Intermas has been developing new materials for its ropes. It has created Biorope, a range of compostable products, which we had presented in these columns . But these ropes had not yet been tested in recreational boating applications. A partnership has just been established with the Uship hardware distribution center to set up real tests with the help of boaters. Twenty or so customers will be selected from all the stores in the Uship network to test the Biorope compostable mooring lines on their boats free of charge during the summer of 2021.

Better understand the behavior for nautical use

The lucky boaters will be invited to use the hawsers to see how they behave and share their feelings. "In talking with Christian Guyomar (Editor's note: Intermas' representative in France), we saw that they didn't have many tests in our field of activity yet. So we proposed to do a test with some of our customers, to be able to keep a direct relationship with them. The idea is that they can test, shoot and play with it! After the summer, in September, we will ask them for their feedback, possibly recovering a few pieces so that Intermas can analyze them. We select to have different types of boats and different places of navigation" explains Rémi Baley, Uship communication manager.

Strengthen Uship's environmental efforts

If the partnership was born from an informal discussion, it is part of Uship's environmental policy. The company communicates strongly on its initiative alongside the Rescue Ocean project, notably sponsoring Axel Tréhin's Class 40. "It is totally in line with what we are trying to do. We don't know how the tests will go and if we will be able to sell Biorope mooring lines in our stores soon. Probably not right away, but it's important to do the tests" concludes Rémi Baley.
