Nemo : A new naval architecture tool under Rhino

The Nemo plug-in is intended for boat designers on Rhino 3D software

The Nemo plug-in, dedicated to naval architects and design offices using Rhino 3D modeling software, is now available in commercial license. Its developer, Mathieu Venot, tells us more about the genesis of the tool and its features.

A study project transformed by the experience of naval architecture

The Nemo toolkit for naval architects and marine engineers working on Rhino 3D modeling software was launched commercially in early 2021. But it was born from a student work, nurtured along the professional career of its initiator Mathieu Venot. "During my internship project in a research laboratory at Ensta Bretagne, I had to work on improving a strength calculation code. I needed a bridge between the Rhino software on which we had the hull files and the needs for the code. So I worked on tools to automatically retrieve the hull characteristics. Since then, I have joined the naval architecture firm L2O Naval. But I have continued to work on this toolbox for automating tasks, especially those that we encountered with our colleagues for the structure or the resistance to forward movement" he explains.

From drag to boat structure

The Nemo plug-in offers various functionalities divided into a large family:

  • Drawing tools for the designer:
    • calculation of the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic coefficients and surfaces of the boat and its hull (displacement, entry angles, mantle measurement...)
    • extraction of dimension tables from the hull
    • summary visualization of the mass estimate
    • automatic image extraction
    • parametric design of propellers
    • parametric design of appendages according to NACA profiles
    • oRC sail plans
  • The tools of resistance to the advance
    • calculation according to the Holtrop formula
    • exports to various hydrodynamic calculation software
  • Tools related to the structure and specification of masses
    • Automation of BOM exports with mass recovery
    • generation of parametric profiles and HP-type standards libraries

Commercial launch of Nemo

After a first free version launched in late summer 2018, the 3rd version available since early 2021 marks the commercial launch of Nemo. Academic or professional licenses, compatible for Rhino GrassHopper, are on sale for interested naval architects and design offices. "It's off to a good start. I have a lot of requests for demos, also in Italy and Spain" concludes the French naval architect.
