AFBE 2026 Awards, BlueNav wins for its virtual anchor without anchoring

The Nice Boating Tomorrow showcased electric solutions. Among the projects singled out was an anchorless position-keeping system developed by BlueNav.

At Nice Boating Tomorrow, the AFBE Trophies highlighted several electric propulsion solutions, with a particular focus on their practical use in sailing.

A distinction that highlights electric positioning systems

The first prize awarded to BlueNav concerns a position-holding system without anchoring. The jury of the Association Française pour le Bateau Électrique (French Association for Electric Boats) chose an approach based on usage rather than technical performance alone.

This choice reflects an evolution in the market. Equipment is no longer limited to pure propulsion. They are now involved in parking, maneuvering and position management.

For yachtsmen and professionals alike, the ability to stay in the zone without anchoring is becoming a real issue, especially in restricted areas.

Technology tested in real-life conditions at the show

Presented afloat in Nice, the system is based on an electric propulsion system capable of continuously correcting wind and current drift. Demonstrations in real-life conditions show that the system is best used in slow phases. The boat remains in a defined position, with automated correction management.

The award-winning project is based on hybrid architecture. The combustion engine remains dedicated to transit, while the electric motor is used for maneuvering and maintaining position. This division corresponds to the uses observed on board. Harbouring and anchoring require precision and responsiveness, while cruising demands autonomy.

But this hybridization requires a more complex management system. The crew has to deal with two energy sources, a steering interface and choices of use depending on the navigation phase.

Technical packages to broaden access to these systems

Following on from this award, BlueNav announces complete configurations integrating electric propulsion, batteries, joystick and steering software. These packages are aimed at boats from 7 to 22 meters, a large segment of the pleasure boating market. The aim is to facilitate integration on existing or new boats.

From a technical point of view, installation remains dependent on on-board electrical capacity, available space and weight distribution. The award highlights the solution, but integration remains a key issue for users.

The other winners, Milikan Boats, SeaZen, E-NAV Systems and Weenav, confirm the sector's move towards electric and hybrid solutions. The Nice award underlines the market's demand for tools that facilitate low-speed navigation and parking. But it also raises the question of their widespread adoption.
