Deauville marina, end of renovation and reflection on the future concession

New pontoon at the Deauville municipal marina

140 m of new pontoons and some shore-based projects, the Deauville municipal marina is finishing its moult. Adaptation to the new boats and preparation of the new concession are on the menu, explains Guillaume Capard.

Final stage of pontoon renewal

Deauville's municipal marina has taken delivery of the latest stage in the renewal of its pontoons. Located along the Quai des Yachts, the new 140-metre long pontoons represent an investment of ?136,320 (incl. VAT), and are part of the harbour renovation process begun in 2004. It will be completed with the construction of new service buildings in 2018. Work on the pontoons was carried out by Metalu.

Accommodating larger boats

"The new pontoons allow us to adapt to the changing size of boats," explains Guillaume Capard, municipal councillor in charge of Deauville's marina. Equipped with eight-meter catways, the new purlin will enable the Normandy port to accommodate larger boats, up to 12 meters.

Port Municipal de Deauville

For a single concession for Deauville's marinas

Deauville has two marinas, both under the authority of the Calvados department. The concession for the port in the heart of the town has been awarded to the municipality, while that for Port-Deauville is managed by the private company Econavia âeuros Compagnie d'exploitation des Ports, which also owns the ports of Redon and Pointe à Pitre. With the contract for the municipal port due to expire in 2021, the town is considering its future. "We don't yet have a position on whether the city will be a candidate for renewal of the concession, but we're not stopping at anything. It's interesting to have control over the tool, particularly to host events like the Solitaire du Figaro, but there are also constraints. On the other hand, what is certain is that we are defending the idea of a single concessionaire for the two ports of Deauville, to enable the pooling of resources. The municipal port has only 380 moorings. If we grouped them together, we'd have more than 1,000 berths, which would give us greater latitude," says Guillaume Capard.

Port Deauville

And in Calvados?

The elected representative of Deauville also looks at what's happening on a larger scale. "The CCI of Caen has a strong presence in the department. We're observing what's happening elsewhere, like with our neighbors in the Manche department, where the idea of a concessionaire for the whole department is taking time. If a single concessionaire is needed in Deauville, a single operator in the department is not necessarily the best."
