Rolls-Royce starts with carbon thruster

Azipull Carbon 65 thruster

Rolls Royce delivers its first Azipull Carbon 65 engine for the Italian shipyard Benetti. An interesting weight saving for fast boats.

Fruit of a collaboration between Rolls-Royce and Benetti

For its Fast Displacement Yacht range, Benetti wanted boats with hulls that, depending on the yard, combined performance with the planning and comfort of a displacement unit. Beyond the work on hull shapes, he decided to collaborate with Roll-Royce to develop a thruster that strictly meets his specifications.

In order to gain in performance, the Norwegian specialist has worked on an optimized version of its Azipull models. While the thruster is usually built entirely of steel, Rolls-Royce engineers have designed new carbon fiber parts to resume transmission forces.

Low weight and fuel consumption

The new Azipull Carbon 65 (AZP C65) weighs only 2,800 kg with a power output of 2 MW; if the manufacturer does not indicate the exact weight gain, it should be compared with an AZP 085, announced at 20,000 kg for 1.7 MW.

The lighter weight of the thruster and therefore of the boat results in fuel savings, which are extremely sought after by owners.

Ironman, the first yacht equipped with AZP C65 has been launched and must be quickly followed by two sisterships. Five boats have already been sold and Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Benetti, indicates that the construction of other units will be launched to reduce delivery times.

The collaboration between Rolls-Royce and Benetti therefore has a bright future ahead of it.
